Carrfields has created a new venture to earn revenue for farmers from their existing scrub, bush, and plantations – this venture is called Carbonfields. This is a one-stop shop that makes it easy for farmers to generate new income without changing their farming system. If your property has existing scrub, bush or plantations that have emerged post 1989, you think these would total 20 hectares or more and the farm is not already registered in the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) , then you may qualify. Vegetation registered in the ETS will receive an annual issue of NZ carbon units every year for the next 50 years which can provide a meaningful additional return to the farmer.
For suitable properties, Carbonfields can run a remote assessment to provide a preliminary view of the carbon potential of your property. There is no cost to the farmer for undertaking the assessment. If the property qualifies, Carbonfields can then complete all the steps needed to get your farm registered. Carbonfields does not charge any upfront fees as it works on a success basis only.
A balanced land use of pastoral farming and native bush (and in places exotics) not only continues to grow agricultural production, it rewards farmers for their revegetation and environmental efforts. Something worth noting is that vegetation registered in 2025 receives the credits for 2023 and 2024 as well, meaning a 3-year payout in early 2026. So if you are considering registering we recommend you apply as soon as possible.
